Primary Principal
Dear Families,
It was a pleasure to meet so many families on campus for our reopening day, parent-teacher conferences, and as mystery guests during Global Citizenship Day. Earth Day and Book Week will be approaching after we return from Semana Santa. We hope that you’ll join us for activities on these days. Until then, I wish you a meaningful and restful vacation and would like to share our list of School Break Literacy Ideas for Home and School Break Literacy Ideas for Travelers.
Have a great vacation!
Ariel
Earth Day (Early Childhood)
This year’s theme is Bee Earthy! On April 22nd, Early Childhood students will meet Luis Zamora Chacon, a beekeeper from Miel Dorada de la Bajura. Mr. Zamora will demonstrate his work with Costa Rica’s stingless mariola bees and share how we can protect these valuable creatures by building beehives and bee hotels on campus. Families are welcome to join based on the schedule below.
Class Reps will help organize an environmentally friendly shared snack. Please consider local ingredients, avoid individually wrapped treats or using biodegradable packaging, and include vegan options.
Earth Day (Elementary)
Elementary students will participate in an Earth Day Summit on April 22nd at 8:15 am. Families are welcome to join!
Students will hold bake sales to raise money for local environmental organizations and then attend the summit to learn more about each organization. After the summit, students will choose how we’ll distribute the donations from the bake sales.
Check out our video to learn more about the Earth Day Summit.
We will be holding three environmentally friendly bake sales to raise money for our Earth Day Summit organizations. Students may choose to participate by bringing a treat to sell during their grade level’s bake sale. Families are also welcome to stop by the pavilion to make purchases between 11:30 am and 12:30. We’d like to promote an environmentally friendly bake sale by encouraging the use of local ingredients, avoiding individually wrapped treats or using biodegradable packaging, and including vegan options. Reusable metal straws will also be sold for 3,000 colones.
When we return from Semana Santa, we will be launching our STEAM Makerspace for Elementary students to use with their class and during select recess periods. If you would like to contribute to this work, please consider donating recyclables and new or used items to be used in children’s engineering projects. You can learn more about maker spaces by watching this video.
MAP testing will take place April 25-May 13. A schedule will be shared after Semana Santa. MAP is an assessment that is used to measure achievement and growth in 1st–5th grade in the areas of math, reading, and language usage. It provides teachers with accurate, and actionable evidence to help target instruction for each student. After students complete this testing, teachers use this data to develop individualized support for students. Teachers also share MAP scores with families so that we can work together to support students.
