Mary Emmerton

Year 5 Teacher
Mary-Emmerton

Mary discovered her passion for teaching over 14 years ago while being part of the community at BSG. During that time, her husband, a Science teacher, inspired her as their two sons embarked on their early educational journey in year 1 and pre-nursery. Engaging deeply in their learning process, Mary actively participated as a parent-representative and dedicated volunteer within the school. The collaborative efforts of a team of compassionate and devoted educators not only nurtured her sons' enthusiasm for learning but also ignited a newfound purpose within her.

Mary's involvement with BSG as a volunteer filled a void that her previous career as an accountant had left, sparking a personal aspiration to contribute to the growth and development of young minds. The family's diverse experiences led them to teach and reside in various parts of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, and a return to China in 2013, where they became part of the Nord Anglia family of schools. This transition marked a pivotal moment in Mary's journey, as her passion for teaching evolved into a full-time vocation. In 2014, Mary's dedication to education took her on a path of continuous learning. While working as an Educational Needs support staff in Nanjing, she embarked on a journey with the University of Nottingham, earning her international teaching certificate (iPGCE). Over the past eight years, Mary has thrived as an educator, finding her career change to be one of her most rewarding decisions. Mary firmly believes that with the right guidance, support, and a nurturing classroom atmosphere, every child can attain success in their educational journey.

Drawing from her diverse experiences teaching students from various cultural backgrounds and skill levels, Mary has embraced the understanding that a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate. Through the implementation of diverse teaching strategies and a commitment to differentiation, Mary empowers her students and instills the confidence necessary for them to strive for excellence. Mary's classroom is characterized by inclusivity, where each student is cherished and respected. She fosters an environment where achievements are celebrated, and setbacks are embraced as opportunities for growth and improvement. In her years of teaching, Mary has not only imparted knowledge but also kindled a love for learning that will resonate with her students throughout their lives.
