BSG Guangzhou Scholarships 2024/25
A founding member of BSG's science department in 2009, Dr Emmerton was inspired to return to the school after his child's experience at the Nord Anglia Global Games in 2019, which was hosted on our South Lake Campus.
My love for learning has driven my educational and professional paths for several decades. After my BSc at the University of Brighton, MSc at Imperial College, London, and PhD at the University of Sheffield, I completed my Secondary Science Teaching Certificate at The University of Portsmouth in 2001. Subsequently, I have worked in a wide variety of schools, within the UK, the Middle East and China, teaching the Sciences to students from Year 5, all the way through to Year 13.
Some achievements during this time have included: guiding students during engineering after-school-activities in the design and full-construction of a petrol-driven, two-seater go-kart with dual-pedals and dual steering; guiding students to achieve A* grade IGCSE’s and A levels in Chemistry, who subsequently embarked on BSc degrees at top tier universities, including Yonsei University, Korea, Imperial College, London and the University of Cambridge, UK.
Joining The British School of Guangzhou and the Science team here was a natural decision when I realised a vacant position became available. The reason for this is three-fold. Firstly, I was previously one of the founding members of Upper Secondary and the Science Department at BSG from 2009-12!
Secondly, I knew Mr Mark Thomas was still the Principal at BSG, and I was very familiar with his talent in driving and guiding the development of an outstanding school, where both academic and non-academic staff at all levels are very frequently retained for multiple contract renewals - which is highly indicative of an exceptionally well-managed and highly successful school.
Thirdly, my youngest child re-visited BSG during his participation in the Global Games in 2019 and was very keen, as was my eldest son, to return to The British School of Guangzhou… inspired and excited even more after their informative, relaxed and very friendly interview with the Head of Secondary, Mr Paul McConnell.
At BSG, we dedicated an entire week to celebrating International Women’s Day with engaging and meaningful activities, ensuring that every student understands its significance.
Last week, our dedicated teachers and leaders travelled to Shanghai for the Nord Anglia China International Schools Leadership Conference, focusing on "planning for the probable, while considering the possible."
BSG was delighted to welcome back Juilliard Music Curriculum Specialist, Ms Andrea Lee, who played a key role in launching the Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme in 2015.
Last weekend, our students—Livvy (9A), Clayton (8D), Juliet (9C), and Eunice (10C)—had the incredible opportunity to attend the ISCMS Orchestra and Choir Festival in Shanghai, an experience they will never forget.
