The Perfect Lie by Helen Asres, North Broward Preparatory School
Removing my tracker, I quickly slip on my shoes. Hopping onto my hoverboard, I was speeding away from the row of pristine, white houses.
Approximately five minutes, I enter sector 15. I look around, making sure nobody saw me. I hastily run into the crumbling alley, pushing my back against the dumpster. Where is Cameron?
I suddenly hear feet slapping the pavement, along with loud ragged breathing. “I'm here!” Cameron exclaims. My heart stops feeling like it's about to burst out of my chest, as I see his face come into view. Trying to look calm and bored, I roll my eyes. “Keep your voice down! And please tell me you didn't forget the food again?” I ask.
Now it was his turn to roll his eyes. “That was one time, Riley.” He says with exasperation in his voice.
A giggle slips from my lips. “Yeah, I know, but that priceless look on your face when you remembered that you forgot it? Ha I would love to have that recorded!”
He laughs along with me. Abruptly a serious look washes over his face. It hardens his soft brown eyes, and sharpens his features.
“I'm guessing you already heard about the information leaked from the government? You know, the one about how we are on water shortage and they didn't want us knowing?”
I nod my head gravely, a distinctive worriedness lacing into my voice as I replied. “What do you think will happen? I mean not everyone knows about the news yet. Do you think they will have a public uproar?” I look at Cameron, desperately compelling him to answer me.
Taking a predatory bite out of his apple, he replies, “ Look Riley, I think it is about time we stand up to the government. Everyone already knows that all this perfectness isn't going to last forever. All this? It’s a lie, and you know it. It merely a game, an illusion that this government have created. But to answer your question I don't know.”
I look at him, my eyes tearing. He shakes his head, taking another bite. We both know his answer is a lie. We both know our whole lives were based off of lies. But the truth is deep down we both know that this lie is better than what's about to come.
