Dan Hollister-Short

Year 6 Teacher
Dan Hollister-Short - Daniel Hollister-Short

BA, PGCE, TESOL, PYP

Dan graduated with a BA (Hons) in Video Media Arts from the University College of Creative Arts in Kent. Shortly after graduating, he worked as an art technician for Damien Hirst, one of the most influential artists of the 21st century. He helped design, create, photograph, and install Damien’s artwork, including a record-selling exhibition at the White Cube Gallery.

Following his work as an art technician, Dan decided to broaden his horizons by traveling with friends to explore Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. Returning to Thailand became the catalyst for the beginning of his teaching journey.

In 2009, Dan relocated to Bangkok, completed a TESOL course, and taught English as a second language for a year and a half. Continuing on his teaching journey, he became a Homeroom teacher at a Bilingual School in Bangkok, where he stayed for seven years teaching all subjects to Grade 3 and Grade 6. In 2016, he completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (International) with the University of Nottingham. For the previous seven years, he has worked in three different British International schools, teaching Years 2-5 in Bangkok, Tianjin, and returning to Bangkok again. He has also completed two PYP Inquiry-based learning certificates, allowing him to apply the pedagogy to his teaching practice, nurturing inquisitive minds and problem-solving.

Dan believes that every child has a talent, and we can give every child the best opportunity by providing them with countless different learning experiences, guiding them towards their future pathways of success. He is a solid believer in social constructivism, following Vygotsky’s notion: “What the child can do today in collaboration, tomorrow they will be able to do independently.” He is a strong advocate of inquiry-based learning, playing a significant role within his pedagogy, allowing children to explore and create student-centred learning. Children become architects of their own learning journeys. Dan sees reflective practice as a key element in teaching and learning. Continual reflection allows the children to refine their skills, turning weaknesses into strengths, and allows teachers to provide the students with the best lessons possible.

Outside the classroom, Dan lives a very active lifestyle, spending most weekends mountain biking, hiking, running, and exploring the great outdoors with his family. He is an avid music lover, enjoying DJing and discovering new music whenever he can. With a background in film and video, he still enjoys making and editing videos. Dan is looking forward to sharing his active lifestyle and creativity with everyone at BSB.

Dan has two children who will be attending BSB. His daughter is six years old and his son is thirteen years old. They are all looking forward to joining the BSB community!
