Eleven of our BSB Model United Nations delegates arrived at BWYA school to partake in the first World Youth Model United Nations (WYMUN) conference on 7 – 8 December, 2024. The students covered a wide range of global issues from cybersecurity to education rights to unemployment and the Cuban Missile Crisis and some students even led their own committees as chairs.
“WYMUN was an amazing experience with so many opportunities to learn and expand your knowledge, if I had the chance to attend again I would do it!” - Pauline Year 10, Outstanding Delegate Award (2nd from right below)
The conference began with lectures from a member of the United States Embassy and the United Nations talking to delegates about the importance of long-term diplomatic solutions in our current world and linking to the conference theme of “The Eye of The Storm: Seeking Permanent Solutions in A Rapidly Changing World”
“As this was my first time in Crisis committee I was honestly quite nervous – I wasn’t sure about the structure of Crisis or how I could balance all of the emergencies that kept happening but I thoroughly enjoyed how we could create our own history whilst practicing diplomacy!” - Maya Year 12, Outstanding Delegate Award (3rd from right below)
From 8 am to 5 pm delegates debated, drafted resolutions, led councils, formed alliances and even assassinated other delegates showcasing their debating skills and their unique creative solutions. With three awards and one honorable mention, the delegates highlighted their knowledge of diplomacy but also their dedication to MUN with how prepared they were. But aside from excellent diplomatic knowledge, delegates from BSB were praised for their togetherness during this conference. Helping other members during break times to formulate ideas, assisting other members with feedback on their resolutions whilst eating lunch and participating in the MUN tradition of signing placards, showcased tremendous collaboration between BSB MUN students of all year groups and in all councils.
“My first experience chairing opened the door for a new area of MUN that I thought I knew everything about” - Lily Year 12 (Chair)
With the assistance of the excellent secretariat and admins in BWYA, all delegates were able to learn more about Model United Nations, make friends from other schools and most importantly, enjoy themselves over the two days. Whether students were attending their first few conferences or working as chair, everyone gained valuable experience from WYMUN and were able to successfully complete the theme of the conference by creating effective long-term solutions to the world's most pressing issues.
Year 12 Wendy, Chair (2nd from right above)
Thank you to Wendy and Lily for leading the club during this conference and making sure that every delegate was prepared and thank you to Mr. Cusack for supervising at the conference, ensuring everything ran smoothly and everyone enjoyed themselves. We hope that BSB can continue participating in these conferences, and we are looking forward to more Model United Nations in Term 2!
