Our STEAM curriculum developed in collaboration with MIT gives our students access to unique learning opportunities exclusive for NAE students.
The winning group in the MIT STEAM Club Challenge on "Movement" was determined through a balloon car race. It was a fun and engaging cross-disciplinary activity that allowed Year 7 science students to apply their knowledge of forces in a practical and creative way.
Today, let's visit one of the Year 7 class to watch their Balloon Car Race!
During the challenge, students were tasked with designing and constructing a balloon-powered car using various materials. They had to consider the principles of forces which they learnt in science lessons, such as propulsion, friction, and aerodynamics, to optimize the performance and speed of their cars.
After designing and making their balloon cars, the groups competed against each other in a race to determine the winner. The race provided an exciting opportunity for students to observe and analyze the forces at play, including the force exerted by the inflated balloon, the friction between the wheels and the surface, and the air resistance affecting the movement of the cars.

Congratulations! Team for Best Design - Jaden, Siyun, Cassie and Jarek
By participating in this activity, students not only reinforced their understanding of forces but also developed skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The hands-on nature of the challenge likely made the learning experience more engaging and memorable for the students.
Overall, the MIT STEAM Club Challenge on "Movement" provided an excellent opportunity for Year 7 science students to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical context while fostering creativity and collaboration.
