BSB Shunyi wish everyone a happy and prosperous Year of the Dragon!
Temple Fair
Everyone had great fun celebrating the Spring Festival today at the BSB Temple Fair. Our school provided great opportunities for our students to showcase their amazing talents. There were shadow puppet performances, kung fu, poetry recitations, Spring Festival themed songs and folk dance etc. The students have spent a lot of time rehearsing for their programme and they were awesome!
We have also invited some folk artists to come and demonstrate traditional crafts such as calligraphy, sugar painting, straw weaving and aluminum weaving. There were interactive activities such as guessing lantern riddles, writing couplets and paper cutting. We also encourage students to wear traditional Spring Festival costumes to better integrate into the festive atmosphere.
A big Thank You to the Chinese Department for organising this lovely event to celebrate Spring Festival!
Spring Festival Classroom Learning
Students have also participated in a variety of learning activities related to Spring Festival. They learn the origins of Spring Festival and the traditional arts and customs associated with it. They tried writing “Fu” characters and couplets, cutting window decorations, making lanterns and dragon caps etc. All these have helped our students consolidate their Chinese language skills and experience the charm of traditional culture through practical experiences.

Students explored Spring Festival culture and presented their findings during class. They wrote “Fu” (meaning Blessings) and other words on red paper using Chinese brush. They experienced the “Hongbao” tradition, writing New Year wish to classmates and swapped Hongbao.
Chinese painting CCA
Students learned about the persimmon - a traditional Chinese painting element related to the Spring Festival theme. In Chinese, the pronunciation of persimmon is the same as “Things”. A picture of persimmon is used to express the wish that everything goes well as you wish.
Celebrating Chinese New Year with EYFS Parents
This week, we invited EYFS parents to join us in creating a vibrant and engaging learning experience for the children. This allowed us to share cultural traditions and customs as we explored the rich heritage of Chinese New Year together. Thank you to our EYFS parents volunteers!
Teddies and Nursery enjoyed making dumplings, which they were then able to enjoy at lunch time. A highlight of Chinese New Year parades, there was a dragon dance led by both teachers and parents.
Nursery children alternated between two different crafts: painting couplets and making key rings. Children availed of wonderful storytelling from parents, related to the typical Spring Festival traditions.
Reception had the opportunity to create lanterns, use stencils and stamps for decorative artwork, sing a Happy New Year song, listening to stories and use their fine motor skills for paper cutting.
