Year 10 students Mario and Moritz just came back from the exciting MIT-Nord Anglia STEAM Week held at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S.A.
Their journey to the STEAM Week at MIT began in Year 9. Both students participated in the “Hacking Challenge” which took place at school level in March 2023 which subsequently saw them progress to the regional level and were selected as part of the final group of students headed for MIT. Attending Lectures:
Mario and Moritz had the opportunity to attend a series of fascinating lectures by current MIT PhD students undertaking cutting edge research. The lectures covered topics ranging from autonomous robots, space exploration to sustainable energy solutions and bioengineering.
Collaborative Projects
One of the highlights of the STEAM Week was the opportunity to work on a collaborative project with fellow participants. Mario and Moritz teamed up with other students to tackle real-world challenges using interdisciplinary approaches. They worked on an innovative project that combined engineering principles with artistic design, resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution. The team worked in the maker space labs situated in the MIT Museum.
Networking Opportunities
The event provided ample networking opportunities for Mario and Moritz to interact with current MIT PhD students in various STEAM fields. They engaged in insightful discussions, asked questions, and received valuable advice regarding their academic and career paths.
Campus Tour and Facility Visits

As part of the MIT STEAM Week, Mario and Moritz were given a comprehensive tour of MIT's campus and state-of-the-art facilities. They visited the admissions department, cutting-edge laboratories, research centers, and innovation hubs. It was an eye-opening experience to witness the incredible work happening at MIT and to see firsthand how science and technology are shaping the future.
Moritz was excited to have met with Fatima Hussein, a current MIT PhD student and the host of MIT Abstracts and Mario was fascinated to see the detection of the first gravitational wave on display in the MIT Museum. The exhibit showcased the groundbreaking discovery made by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015.
Finally, both students have returned to BSB inspired and motivated to make the best of the learning opportunities at BSB and strive for excellence.
