Silverware success!
Children in KS2 participated in the annual BSB Shunyi Football Invitational Tournament, now in its 5th year. After a fantastic start to the year in football during PE lessons and also ASA’s, Mr Magson assembled both boys’ and girls’ teams from each year group, as BSB Sanlitun invaded our Shunyi sister school in an action packed week of football.

After a fantastic start to the year in football during PE lessons and also ASA’s, Mr Magson assembled both boys’ and girls’ teams from each year group, as BSB Sanlitun invaded our Shunyi sister school in an action packed week of football.
The Y6 children got the ball rolling on Tuesday 17th October, as the U11 girls team brought home the 3rd place trophy with some spirited and determined performances, resulting in a nail-biting penalty shootout success against BSB Shunyi. The girls performed fantastically as a team throughout the day with goals coming in large from set-piece specialist Kiera Yu. The U11 boys’ team were quick out of the blocks, recording two impressive victories against CISB and BSB Shunyi. However, some tough defeats in the final two group games left the boys with a daunting quarter final tie against Harrow. The boys put in a good display but were unfortunate to bow out of the tournament at the quarter final stage. Ivan Azarin was the standout performer for the boys as he weighed in with a total of 8 goals, including some fabulous solo efforts!
Wednesday, saw the pupils from Y5 descend upon the green pitches of Shunyi, as the U10 tournament survived wet and miserable conditions to continue the festival of football. The U10 girls blitzed through the group stages to set up a tense finale against BSB Shunyi. Goals from the attacking pair of Naobi Campbell and Zoe Ford had set the girls on their way to victory throughout the opening games; however it was Kalia Yilmaz whose freekick nestled into the back of the net, as the girls came from a goal down to defeat BSB Shunyi 2-1 in a very close final. The U10 boys, sailed through their group with relative ease as they finished 2nd behind a very strong Harrow outfit. The boys suffered defeat to the eventual winners BWYA in the semifinal, however avenged their earlier loss to Harrow by winning a fantastic 3rd/4th place play off to take home the 3rd place trophy with Taylor Lam leading from the front.
The tournament was brought to a close on Thursday, as children from both Y3 and Y4 finished off the week in style, bringing home another 3 trophies to the Sanliun cabinet. The U9 girls, fresh off their success at the JISAC tournament before the October holidays, continued to carry out their mission ‘Demolition of Opposition’ under the guidance of Mr Magson. The girls stormed through the tournament unbeaten once again. The defensive triangle of Eilidh McFarlane, Indi Peak and Kahupotiki McDermott-Samuels where rock solid in thwarting any opposition attacks. Nika Jelavic and Addy Whitney provided clever passes in midfield for the dynamic duo of Loppi Heydolph and Kahurangi McDermott-Samuels to do the business in attack. The girls sailed home in 1st place and maintained their unbeaten start to the year! The U9 boys, led by Mr Laird, got off to a flying start with a great 3-1 victory against giants NTA Academy. The boys then swept aside the remaining teams with ease in their group, recording some eye catching scorelines, finishing with a goal difference of +37 goals! Roy Ophir and Andres Urdaneta were devastating in attack and Thomas McCormac provided tireless energy in midfield as the boys set up what can only be described as a ‘real cup final’ against BIBA. The boys exploded into a 4 goal half time advantage. However, BIBA came back with three goals of their own to set up a tense finale, with phenomenal last ditch challenges and saves from defenders Lenny Kirchherr and Hamoudi Al Madi in the BSB Sanlitun goal. The boys held on to record a brilliant win and brought home yet another 1st place trophy!
It was the Y3 children’s first taste of competitive sporting action as part of KS2 sport at BSB Sanlitun. Both boys and girls teams settled in fantastically to the demands of the competitive environment. The U8 boys recorded an impressive 9-0 victory in their first game as a team, with all boys managing to get on the scoresheet in a resounding team display. The U8 girls team finished in 3rd position winning yet another trophy, bringing the total number of trophies for the week to 6! The girls worked tirelessly throughout the day for one another, interchanging positions on the field and showcased the skills they had learnt during PE lessons when in KS1.
It was a fantastic effort from all children who represented the school at the football tournaments at Shunyi, with 6 out of 8 teams bringing home silverware for the cabinet. Mr Magson was incredibly proud of the children’s resilience and teamwork as the pupils really showed first hand that hard work certainly does pay off.
