Year 6 Eagles have begun an enquiry into how climate change is affecting people and places all around the world.
Their first task was to answer the question, Why is Elhaji cleaning shoes on the streets of Banjul? Students wrote their answers in the form of explanatory texts, being ambitious not only in the descriptions of the location of The Gambia (which made good use of geographical vocabulary) but also in the flexible thinking that allowed them to analyse key information about Elhaji.
A further challenge was met by their incorporating structural, grammatical and stylistic conventions of non-fiction writing, including (but not limited to) the following: parentheses, colons, a formal tone and the passive voice.
