This week the Alligators, Elephants, Monkeys and Pandas in Year 2 began their new English unit, centred around the story Meerkat Mail.
We began the week with the children reading the opening pages of the book and coming up with descriptive language to describe the main character, Sunny the Meerkat. The story will follow Sunny’s journey to find somewhere ‘perfect’ to live.
The children worked collaboratively, using their fluent thinking skills, to think of as many different places that Sunny could live. They then used water colours to paint these places. We had a range of settings from beaches, to castles and even some in space!
Later on in the week, the paintings were used as a stimulus for the children to write descriptive sentences. Using adjectives to add interest to the sentences, the children wrote a paragraph describing their setting painting. We will have to wait and see whether Sunny visits any of the ‘perfect’ places we painted.
