Amplifying student voices: Introducing the BIS HCMC student media team

Celebrating the stories, achievements, and experiences that make our school community unique

A great story depends on the cast, a compelling plot depends on the characters, and a meaningful theme depends on the depth of its origin. Whilst a narrative typically follows one protagonist, each and every character adds something unique to the story. At BIS HCMC, we want all students of our diverse community to be the main characters - What’s a story without the voices that bring it to life?

This belief drove us, a group of passionate students, to form our Student Media Team—a channel for sharing the perspectives and experiences of students at BIS HCMC. And now, with our soft launch in secondary assemblies, we’re excited to introduce a new way to amplify student voices. Our role is not to be rule enforcers or news curators; we are students like you. We're here for you—to celebrate your victories and bring your ideas to life. No matter how big or small, loud or quiet, your story deserves to be heard—and we’re here to tell it. Consisting of members ranging from Years 7 to 13, the Student Media Team will encapsulate the youthful essence of our experiences, vibrantly celebrate student successes, and promote the wide range of activities in which our students engage. One of the team founders, Tim, mentions “In a diverse student body group like BIS, every day is a new opportunity to share inspiring, fun moments amongst one another, one story at a time”. Our team brings a diverse range of skills to elevate modern communication. With expertise in photography, cinematography, video editing, writing, graphic design, and more, we’re equipped to capture and share stories that matter.

Since the founding of BIS HCMC in August 1997, marketing and communications have been imperative in showcasing the values and achievements of our students. To compliment this, we have now created a student body to support marketing in providing a platform for everyone, an opportunity for all students to demonstrate their capabilities beyond the classroom. Whilst our school already has a strong social media presence, the Student Media Team will add to this, providing insight into the spirit and dynamism of our peers, in a way that has never been achieved before.

This team will cultivate a creative and enthusiastic online community that truly captures and reflects the thrill and excitement of the student experience at BIS HCMC. Above all, we want to foster a deeper connection within our community through uniting students across all campuses. Team founder Atom exclaims “The Student Media Team is something that has boundless potential to strengthen our collective spirit. My only wish is for all of you to play a role in helping this team succeed!”.

Our school passionately encourages student participation, whether in the arts, sports, community service, leadership positions or beyond. We take pride in showcasing the many talents of our students at every opportunity. Whether it's the quiet excitement of someone joining the school’s sports team for the first time, or the satisfaction of watching a club come together after weeks of planning, small victories like these should always be recognised. However, sometimes they can go unnoticed in the rush of school life. We set out to create a platform for students, by students—a space where we shape the narrative, celebrate each other, and ensure every student, regardless of year group, feels seen and represented. As stated by team founder, Ida, “The Student Media Team is a conduit through which the voices of all students at BIS may be amplified. Let’s inspire change, together.” So here we are, building a space where students can take charge of the stories they want to tell.

So, what's next?

This is just the beginning. We're here to amplify everything that makes BIS HCMC truly unique.

We're supporting the improvement of the CCA selection process to give a greater insight into the unique personalities that make our CCA’s so special. Especially our student led CCA’s. It's time for a fresh approach! We aim to showcase the full picture by giving students a real glimpse of what the clubs really do, what they stand for, and why they matter. We hope that, by doing so, our students will be better equipped with information, so they can find the most suitable activities for them.

Above all, we want the student voice to be at the heart of everything. So, expect interviews, student-submitted stories, and maybe even a few fun reels on our social media.

Next time you see us sprinting down the sidelines, exploring new clubs, or typing away furiously, you’ll know exactly why—we’re here to capture every moment that makes our school community shine. Our role is to bring your stories to life, one click or post at a time. And remember to keep your eyes peeled because your big moment may be the one we’re covering next! Whether it’s your Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) project making a difference, a teacher who inspired you, or a young student taking their first steps in leadership, we want to hear it, share it, and celebrate it!
