At BIS HCMC, our Primary Expeditions are more than just school trips—they are life-changing expeditions that shape our students into confident, independent individuals. Earlier this month, our Year 4, 5, and 6 students embarked on thrilling journeys to Long Hai, Can Gio, and Cat Tien. These experiences take students beyond the classroom and into Vietnam’s rich natural landscapes, offering them the chance to learn about the world around them, embrace challenges, and build lifelong memories. While adventure is at the heart of these trips, the true value lies in the personal growth, resilience, and camaraderie that students develop along the way.
Year 6 Cat Tien Expedition: A True Test of Endurance and Excitement
For our Year 6 students, the Cat Tien expedition was an unforgettable adventure that took them deep into the heart of nature. They pushed themselves through an array of physical and mental challenges. From cycling along rugged trails to kayaking through serene waters and hiking through dense jungle terrain, students stepped out of their comfort zones and into an experience that tested their endurance, teamwork, and determination.
"The Cat Tien expedition was an incredible journey of growth and resilience," said Mr. James Quantrill, Head of Year 6. "Our students embraced every challenge, from cycling rugged trails to navigating jungle hikes and kayaking through winding rivers. Beyond the adventure, it was inspiring to see them learn about the world around them, support conservation efforts at the Bear Sanctuary, and develop a deeper sense of global citizenship. They returned exhausted but proud, having pushed their limits and built memories that will stay with them for years to come."
Despite the intensity of their adventures, moments of relaxation and reflection were just as impactful. At the tranquil Orchard Home Resort, students found time to unwind and bond with their peers—although, after action-packed days, they were more than ready for the comforts of home. A highlight of the trip was a visit to Free the Bears at the Nam Cat Tien Bear Sanctuary, where students had the privilege of observing Moon Bears during feeding time and learning about critical conservation efforts. Demonstrating a spirit of global citizenship, our students also presented a generous donation of food items, reinforcing the importance of giving back and supporting environmental initiatives.
Year 5 Can Gio Expedition: Exploring the Mangrove Ecosystem
Year 5 students immersed themselves in the breathtaking landscapes of Can Gio, an area rich in biodiversity and ecological significance. They explored the fragile mangrove ecosystem, trekked through its unique terrain, and even had the opportunity to interview a volunteer at the local conservation area.
One of the most thrilling highlights was paddleboarding through the stunning surroundings, a challenge that tested their balance, confidence, and teamwork. Additional activities included kayaking, outdoor games, and team challenges, all designed to push their problem-solving skills and resilience.
"The Can Gio expedition was all about discovery—whether it was learning about the world around them in the mangroves, testing their balance on paddleboards, or stepping up to new challenges," said Ms. Judith Handscombe, Head of Year 5. "What stood out most was the students' willingness to support one another. They encouraged their friends through every challenge, adapted to new situations, and grew in confidence with each passing day. Seeing them return with a sense of pride and accomplishment was truly rewarding."
Our staff were especially proud of the students' courage and camaraderie as they tackled new experiences, made new friends, and supported one another. They learned to adapt without the immediate help of their families, demonstrating increasing independence. Along the way, they even picked up a few cheeky tricks—including the classic game of ding-dong ditch.
This trip was filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable moments.
Year 4 Long Hai Expedition: A Week of Fun, Growth, and Independence
Long Hai is the highlight of the year for our Year 4 students, and this year was no exception. The week was packed with beach games, wave-splashing, garden explorations, and poolside fun. No lessons? Think again.
The most important lessons weren’t found in books but in the personal growth we saw in each student at the end of the expedition. When students returned home, many families were surprised to find their children standing a little taller—both literally and figuratively—exuding a newfound sense of maturity and independence.
"For many of our students, this was their first time away from home, and they embraced every challenge with enthusiasm," said Mr. Mike Martin, Head of Year 4. "From looking after their own belongings to encouraging their friends through new experiences, they showed incredible growth in just a few days. It was amazing to see their confidence soar as they realised just how capable they truly are."
For the first time, these young adventurers took responsibility for themselves—supporting their friends, tackling new experiences, and embracing the challenges of being away from home. Working as a team to overcome challenges and create change, your child will create meaningful friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Their confidence has soared, and after conquering Long Hai, they truly feel unstoppable.
