Year 4 students are at the beginning stages of their exciting new International Primary Curriculum (IPC) topic ‘Explorers and Adventurers’.
The topic began with an opportunity for them to explore their school grounds as part of a treasure hunt. Teams had to follow clues to collect items that they deemed useful for an expedition to a given location (Mount Kilimanjaro; Phuong Nga Cave; The Amazon Rainforest; The Sahara Desert). Students had to discuss and decide on only five items that they would bring on their given trip and justify their choices.
The students had further opportunities to develop their reasoning skills while working on a group activity investigating the development of world maps. They had to examine a series of historic maps and order them. This required the students to compare and contrast the maps and then agree on an order; not an easy task!
A third activity that students in Year 4 have been involved in is an art activity inspired by the mythological creatures featured on the Carta Marina, a map of Nordic countries published in 1539. Students analysed the illustrations and created their own mythological creatures that would have warned seafaring explorers and adventurers that dangers were ahead!
