Success Continues in Jakarta
On Thursday, 13th March, eight children from Year 5 and Year 6 flew to British School Jakarta, Indonesia, to compete in the FOBISIA Mathematics Competition 2025. This prestigious event brought together schools from across Asia, including Kazakhstan, Singapore, Korea, Nepal, and China, for two days of intense mathematical challenges. With 128 students competing from across 32 schools, the event culminated in a demanding ninety-minute individual test.
Throughout the competition, our students showcased exemplary behaviour, embodying the values of our BIS Aide Memoire. Their determination and teamwork were truly outstanding, leading to an incredible performance:
- Year 5 Team – Finished 10th out of 32 high-performing teams, surpassing many Year 6 competitors from across Asia.
- Year 6 Team – Achieved 1st place, securing the top spot in the competition!
- Special Recognition – Jay, Year 6 earned gold medal status in the Individual Challenges. Congratulations to our Primary Champions
A huge round of applause to our talented competitors:

A Community Effort
These remarkable achievements are a testament to the dedication and talent of our students, as well as the unwavering support from our BIS HCMC mathematics specialists. A special thank you to Mr. Ben Sillitoe, Assistant Head of Mathematics, for organising the World Mathematics Competition, and Mr. Kevin McCann, Mathematics Key Stage Coordinator, for his invaluable support. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Andy James, Primary Maths Enrichment Leader and Year 5 Class Teacher, and Ms. Liz Eaton, Year 6 Class Teacher, for their dedication in preparing our young mathematicians for the FOBISIA competition and accompanying them on their journey.
This is just the beginning for our talented mathematicians. With their impressive achievements in Vietnam and Jakarta, they have proven that they are ready to take on even greater challenges. We look forward to seeing our Year 12 students represent BIS HCMC on the world stage at Imperial College London—we have no doubt they will continue to make us proud!
