The IB Vietnamese Literature course here at BIS HCMC aims to encourage a personal appreciation of literature and to help students develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism.
Last weekend a group of BIS students studying Vietnamese Literature for their IB Diploma stepped outside their comfort zone and dared to discover more as they went on their literature expedition to Quy Nhon. They visited Han Mac Tu’s grave, Dong Ta charity centre, Tay Son Brothers Temple, Xuan Dieu’s memorial house and Twin Cham Temples and will now be able to take the invaluable lessons learned back into the classroom for their upcoming assessments. Find out more in this post by one of our IB Vietnamese Literature students Jane Tran.
The trip was remarkable and beyond amazing! I learned a lot about the Vietnamese Literature culture and made some really deep connections with my new friends.
The very first sight that we visited was Han Mac Tu's grave. After that, we had a chance to visit Dong Tam charity center and played with the deafened and disabled children. The kids really enjoyed playing with the balls and tug of war, we had such a great time knowing that we brought joy and humor to them and seeing those kids' smiles really touched me; I realised how lucky I was and how much I should appreciate life more. Moreover, I also promised to myself that when this trip was over, I would learn sign language to be able to communicate with the unfortunate people and to shorten the distance between individuals.
The next day, we went to the Tay Son Brothers Temple: Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue and Nguyen Lu. The middle brother - Nguyen Hue became the king and he contributed a lot to the country and as I was listening to the guide, a curiosity sparked in me. I wanted to know more about the Vietnamese history e and the information given to us was really helpful and I can now use some of this as a reference to make my Vietnamese essays more complete.
Later on, we visited Xuan Dieu's memorial house - he is the poet that we're currently learning about in our Vietnamese lessons. In the afternoon, the highlight of the trip took place in the auditorium at our hotel. A representative from Xuan Dieu Fan Club - and he is also a Vietnamese literature teacher at an university who spends most of his lifetime studying and understanding Xuan Dieu's poems spent some time sharing with us significant things about Xuan Dieu's work. We had a chance to ask him questions related to Xuan Dieu's life and his work.
After, we went to see the Twin Cham Temples constructed by the Thai earlier in the 11th century; their sophisticated architecture was remarkable and breath-taking. Near there, we were invited to a coffee shop operated by a group of whole-hearted people with disabilites. The place was cozy, vintage and very warming. We were so lucky to enjoy the S Girl Band perform - they’re specialized in traditional Vietnamese instruments. The "S" in "S Girl Band" stands for "Special" - meaning that the group members are unique - their musical talent blew us away.
The next day, we flew back to Saigon at 8:50 A.M and to be honest, saying goodbye to the memories from Quy Nhon was really hard. I just want to show my appreciation towards my teacher who gave us this opportunity to step outside our comfort zone and dare to discover and learn more. To my friends - who make me feel involved in everything I thank them for making such sweet memories with me. I regret nothing.
