U13 FOBISIA Games Hong Kong Day 4

Today, it all came to an end, but we went out with a bang!

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball got off to a strong start with a 12-0 win over TES, we were anticipating a tough game but some strong shooting from Ela Walsh as well as the superior skill of our girls meant it was a straightforward victory in the end.

Next up were NAIS Pudong and once again the BIS girls proved too strong for them, breaking open their zone defence and finding a lot of space to put their shots up. The final score was 21-7 to BIS.

DCB made a strong start to the third game keeping the score to 6-4 after the first quarter but after a quick team talk and refocus BIS pulled away to a comprehensive 24-4 win, with some standout performances from the Handscombe sisters.

Our 4th game of the day came against the host school Kellett. They had been looking strong all day and we knew they would be the team to beat. Kellett played a well organised game with a strong defence that made it difficult for BIS to break through. Some excellent shooting from Annika Decker kept BIS ahead for most of the game and it was 14-11 with 2 minutes to go. Some controversial decisions and poor timekeeping meant that both teams ended up on team fouls with two players each fouled out. After putting one free throw in and making the score 14-12 Kellett were once again awarded two shots with no time left on the clock, under immense pressure the Kellett shooter put both shots in to mean the game ended 14-14 as a draw. This was the only game where some poor refereeing cost BIS however the girls showed a mature and professional approach throughout.

BIS went into their final game against BS Jakarta knowing if they could keep a 13 point goal difference ahead of Kellett they would be crowned champions. This wasn’t enough for our girls though and they went out with a point to prove, every basket counted and some outstanding fast breaks from Annika and Emily Marshall put BIS 14-0 up after only one quarter. By the time the 3rd quarter started BIS were 28-4 with only 2 more points needed to apply the mercy rule. After a shooting foul Gemma Handscombe put both her free throws in to reach that 30 point target, this meant that no matter what Kellett did in their next game there was no way BIS could be caught on goal difference.

The BIS girls played with skill, maturity and beautiful teamwork throughout the day, they truly deserved to be champions and the best basketball team won overall.

MVP for Basketball

Annika Decker was the player of the tournament. She led by example throughout the day, hustling every ball on defence, putting in every shot and always encouraging her team. Annika showed why she was chosen as not only basketball captain but overall FOBISIA captain, her attitude both on and off the court was exemplary and no one could match her for skill. Well done Annika.

Boys Football

The boys were eagerly looking forward to playing on the Kellet sky pitch. Mr Huy had been working with the team for weeks and they were keen to put into practice everything they had learnt. The first game was against TES, after some high energy pressing and excellent tackling BIS began to create chances. It wasn’t long before BIS seized one of the opportunities to take an early lead. After the half time break BIS resumed their attacking football and made the result secure winning 3-0, an excellent start to the tournament.

The second match didn’t go to plan; NAIS moved the ball at pace and BIS defenders were sluggish often making last ditch tackles to stop a goal scoring opportunity. Half way through the first half NAIS were rightly awarded a penalty after one of the players were tripped. The NAIS striker converted the penalty and moment before half time converted a free kick to make it 2-0. BIS did manage a mini comeback to make it 2-1 but NAIS were the dominant team and eventually won 4-1.

The third game saw a return to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over DCB. BIS had two games to play and after watching previous matches two of the most talented teams still to face. First up was the host school Kellet, unbeaten and home advantage; they played smart and simple football craving open our defence at will. After 10 minutes of spirited resistance our defence was unlocked by a through ball and the game was won. Kellet defended masterfully unfortunately we created very few scoring opportunities; Kellet sealed the victory with two late goals and also secured the goal medal.

Last up was BSJ, they were only one point behind us in the league table and it was winner takes all for the bronze medal. After a tense opening exchange BIS created some excellent chances but were unable to convert. Our defence stood strong and resisted the BSJ attack. Shortly before half time the deadlock was broken and BIS erupted with cries of celebration. The game wasn’t to be won so easily, after half time BSJ pinned back BIS and the pressure was relentless. The BIS defenders held their nerve only to concede with 2 minutes left to play. The last two minutes were frantic and a tense affair, BSJ hit the crossbar and the ball ricocheted ball away from the line. With moments to left to play Max Jencks had a one on one with keeper but it wasn’t to be. The game ended 1-1 and with a better performance across the entire tournament BIS were awarded a hard fought yet ultimately well-deserved bronze medal. 

MVP Football

Max Jencks was not only fantastic in attack but also solid in defence. He sprinted about the pitch with a passion and desire to make an impact. Max was not only the football captain, he was the FOBISIA captain. He led by example on and off the pitch and demonstrated a maturity beyond his years.
