OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Primary School at The British College of Brazil covers the English National Curriculum’s guidance for Key Stages 1 and 2. From our home base in São Paulo, Brazil, our teachers guide and shape stimulating activities that build up each student’s confidence and encourage them to harness their natural curiosity. Through the International Primary Curriculum, our learners achieve high levels of knowledge, skills, and understanding across the curriculum, while enjoying the learning process.

Personalised Learning and Attention in Primary School

At The British College of Brazil, Assistant Teachers work alongside class teachers in every Primary year group  (Pre-Nursery to Year 6). This allows every student to have more personal attention from a staff member, and for teachers to closely monitor their progress.

Primary children work for most of the week with their class teacher, although our specialist teachers lead certain subjects, such as Portuguese, Brazilian Social Studies, Music and Physical Education. All teaching staff speak English and have appropriate teaching qualifications and experience in delivering the English National Curriculum's activities.

MORNING WELCOME
Our energetic school leaders greet us as we enter school, catch up with our friends, and share information across families. We might tell our teachers more about what’s happening at home, or we might pass a football and play some music before heading to our first class.

GETTING READY

MUSICAL TUNES
We discover the world through curricula that take us on adventures about many different topics – and we build several kinds of skills, as a result. In music class, for example, we learn harmony and tempo with different tunes, and assemble to play for our parents and the extended community.

LUNCHTIME AND PLAY
We come together at midday to eat our nutritious lunches while discussing our thoughts and swapping stories with our teachers, TAs, or peers. In between lots of laughs, we may then shift to an active recess that can include life-size chess, football, basketball, or jump rope.

TELLING STORIES
We get engrossed in a book of our choice every day, and we practice using our own words – from summarising what we’ve read to inventing our own imaginative story. We can enrich our expression through Spanish or Portuguese lessons and arts and crafts activities, too.

AFTER-SCHOOL FUN
After school, the learning doesn’t end! During extracurricular activities, we can continue to explore different things, and see what we do or don’t like. We might discover talents in rock band, hand-sewing, arts, reading, or sports – to name just a few favourites.
EXPLORING NEW INTERESTS

KEY STAGE 1

At Key Stage 1 of the English National Curriculum, the aim is for young students to enjoy their time at school and to build the knowledge, understanding, and values to reach their full potential in all academic and social areas of school life. there is a daily focus on English and Mathematics. Music, Physical Education and Portuguese are also essential aspects of the curriculum, led by our teams of specialist teachers. Other subject areas, such as Computing, Science, and History, are covered in thematic units of work taken from the International Primary Curriculum.

In language and literacy lessons (English and Portuguese), we provide a rich and stimulating environment for children to find interest and pleasure in communicating effectively. We give them a range of experiences to build their interest in reading with fluency, accuracy, understanding, and enjoyment.

In Mathematics lessons, we help students build their knowledge and understanding of the subject in everyday life. We encourage students to relate their work to other areas of the curriculum, making links between the different strands of their learning journey.

KEY STAGE 2

At Key Stage 2 of the English National Curriculum, we help students build their inquiry skills, using active investigative methods that make learning purposeful. We encourage each child’s independence, while ensuring that they meet the main requirements of the English National Curriculum.

In line with UK expectations, students complete end-of-year assessments that identify progress and achievement very clearly in the ‘Core’ areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Specialist teachers deliver outstanding lessons across Physical Education, Music and Portuguese. Students are also encouraged to explore areas of interest to them with the aim of uncovering their own hidden talents.

Our curriculum also incorporates Science, Geography, History, Art and Design, PSHE, as well as Computing. These subjects areas are covered through the International Primary Curriculum's thematic units of work.

THE INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY CURRICULUM

The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is an internationally researched curriculum for learners aged 5-11 years old, presented to schools through core documentation, practical materials and supporting resources. Learning and teaching activities are created through developed units of study.

Central to the IPC is the aim to improve learning for all students. Here at BCB, we have carefully selected a range of units that are specifically designed for each ’milepost’, delivering appealing themes that provide age-appropriate learning. A ‘milepost’ is two years of learning driven by a selection of Learning Goals; there are 3 mileposts across the 6 years of Primary schooling. A range of subjects are covered in each thematic unit including Science, Geography, History, Health and Wellbeing, Art and Computing.

Central to the units we have selected are the 8 Personal Learning Goals of the IPC. Through our 6 Learner League superheroes, our students learn to understand and apply these essential skills in the tasks they are given and throughout their school experience.

The final area of focus is International learning. Our students are able to gain a deeper understanding by considering a range of perspectives from people around the world. International learning develops international mindedness and global competency, allowing our students to take action and make a difference.

A PERSONALISED JOURNEY TO SUCCESS

We put students' best interests at the heart of everything we do at The British College of Brazil. Our teachers will tailor your child’s journey, supporting and challenging them to become a problem solver and critical thinker – so they’ll be fit for success, no matter what the future brings.
