Our Flames basketball players show their talent in the annual 3on3 in Phuket and find out about some exciting changes planned for our weekend academies. Join our Flames and Marlins Facebook page to follow all the action.
We had a thoroughly brilliant trip to Phuket for the annual 3on3. We took 8 teams this year as the interest in basketball at St Andrews has grown in the past year.
We dominated the U13 category, with both boys’ and both girls’ teams reaching the finals. The A teams won both, but it was not one-sided at all, and all four teams put on masterclass performances for this age group. Their technical ability and tactical understanding was evident, and with so many Y7s involved, it shows the future is very bright for Flames bball!
In the U15s, the Girls A reached the final, where they lost the final. They should be proud of their achievements against a strong opponent. The Girls B team reached the Plate final, which they won with a golden basket: all very tense but they deserved the victory as it showed how far they have progressed in their own bball.
The U15 Boys B team came 3rd, only losing all weekend to our own A team and the other finalists. The A team, meanwhile, came up against a team who beat them twice en route to the finals. They played incredible defense to shut out probably one of the best high school ballers we’ve all seen, and won the final by two points!
I’m sure you can see from the action photos just how good our ballers have become.
We have some U15 friendly games against BCIS this Thursday and on Monday 21 June, our Y7 girls will take on our Y6 girls in an all-Flames pre-season match-up.
We’re working on plans to develop our weekend programme, which, we hope, will include opening up to non-STA ballers in new sessions added to the schedule. We often have requests for this, and we think it will provide new opportunities for our own ballers to play against some new opponents. Watch this space.
We recently emailed Flames parents regarding the upcoming U15 Games in November. If you haven’t replied yet, please do so soon so that we can progress with team selection. Discussions often take us some time, and we’d like to begin these soon.
Please note that there is no swimming at these next U15 Games, as many schools find it hard to get serious swimmers to attend if they’re not also games players, and many games players at U15 level no longer wish to swim.
Swimming will still be in the U13 Games in March.
Just a reminder to join our STA Flames and Marlins Group on Facebook, as we’d like to use this to keep everyone updated on games, training etc. We know that not everyone is a Facebook user, but we would recommend joining the group even if you don’t use Facebook for any other reason.
It’s a very convenient way for us to reach out and share information from wherever we are. We’re also on Instagram and continue to use our St Andrews Facebook page to post photos of our amazing Flames and Marlins in action.
On Saturday 16th June we will host our termly STA tennis tournament for students, staff & parents. The purpose of this tournament is to enjoy some fun and competitive tennis in a relaxed community setting.
