Thai musicians inspired our Year 4 with their prodigious talents while also stimulating their curiosity… In High School, our music ECAs launched to great fanfare.
Last week we welcomed two Thai Musicians into our Year 4 music lessons to support the children’s topic work on Thai Music. Khroo Pom and Khroo Toon demonstrated their skills on Ranard, Klong Khek, Ching and Angkalong. It was wonderful to hear some real experts and to see what different techniques they used to make the music.
The Year 4s had the chance to experience playing a rhythmic pattern on the klong, performing a pentatonic pattern on the Angkalong and playing both the open and closed sounds on the ching.
The children asked some excellent questions and made some great observations:
“Why are most Thai instruments made of wood?”
“He keeps his beaters parallel (when playing Ranard)”
“How do they make the sound ring on the klong?”
“To make a long sound he hits the same note lots of times, very quickly.”
We hope that the children can remember all they learnt so they can apply their knowledge when playing a piece in our class Thai ensemble.
Thank you so much to Khroo Kitty for organising our visitors for us. Also, a big thank you to Khroo Oat and Khroo Na for translating, and Khun Nay for taking photos.
