Learning Dutch

Learn Dutch for Children | NAIS Rotterdam - Learning Dutch
Nord Anglia International School Rotterdam is proud of its deep connection to our host country and to Dutch-speaking people around the world.

Since our students come from more than 40 different countries, our primary teaching language is English. But we are committed to helping our children to learn Dutch.

Roughly 30% of our student population are Dutch-speaking, and we know that the parents of our Dutch students are eager for their children to develop their mother-tongue. We also know that new families arriving in the Netherlands find it important for their children to begin their Dutch classes straight away. So NAISR offers daily Dutch classes, at either a native level or as an additional language.

Learning Dutch at a native level

The NAISR Language Philosophy recognises the importance of maintaining and developing Dutch as a native language. We follow the curriculum established by the Netherlands Institute for Curriculum Development.

Learning Dutch as a second language

Dutch language and culture is an essential part of our school curriculum. Throughout the year we celebrate many Dutch traditions. We cater to a range of Dutch language levels, from complete beginner to home language.  We follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Beyond the academics

We strive to make the most of our location in our approach to teaching the Dutch language. Students have opportunities to practice their language skills outside the classroom in the following settings:

  • Language Celebration Days
  • Annual exchange with another Dutch school
  • All national holidays and celebrations are honored, including Kings Day celebrations

All students at NAISR also enjoy free membership to Dutch libraries.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the following activities:

  •  Help with organising Language Days
  •  Help with organising Dutch celebrations such as Sinterklaas and Koningsdag

If you wish to discuss Dutch language opportunities at the school please contact our Modern Language Coordinator by emailing queiries@naisr.nl
