Reflecting on the Year 5 Trashion Show
The day started with an overwhelmingly brilliant Trashion Show from children in Year 5! This morning, an enraptured audience was presented with creativity, criticality, and challenge as children articulated ‘why’ we should review the true impact of fashion on our environment.
We listened to children talk about the impact that single-use fashion and fabric production has on our environment. We heard about the damage that is done to our planet when items are discarded and how we can all come together to affect a change, in this case, upcycling fashion. In fact, there were emphatic calls to action for balance and consideration of the shelf life of clothes in our wardrobes that may be cast aside. There are many options here in Hong Kong to make donations to a range of charities that would benefit from recycled or upcycled items, particularly at this time of the year.
Year 5 set a timely reminder for us to consider that a ‘teaspoon of change’ can start at home and build from there. We can make a change in our habits and decisions that will improve our environment, and this is a nice segway into our festive period. Here at school and at home, we might consider how we reduce food waste or create more balance for ourselves and our children in our choices. In reducing food waste, we impress on our children the importance of respecting the food that we have available and understanding the impact on our environment and others of reducing waste.
The Trashion Show was a great start to the week, and one that made us reflect on the impact that we can have on our home life, school life and the environment around us.
