Community Outreach
May Ed Collis and her ‘cooking for the homeless’ mission.
When People Happen, Communities Happen!
Community Outreach is also about listening to stories of people, people who make a difference in the community through their humble ways of living and learning from them!
On this month of Harvest, we would like to introduce you to Ms May Ed Collis, a retired journalist, turned self funded farmer 🌱and a community volunteer.
Ms May loves cooking and farming. After retirement, Ms May found peace and gratitude by cooking for the homeless street dwellers in the city through a charity organization. During covid time, when the charity organization stopped the cooked-meal donation, owing to pandemic restrictions in the city, Ms May could not forget the hungry faces waiting for their lunch at the street sides and parks.
So, three years ago, she rented a kitchen, began cooking once a week, on every Tuesday, and began distributing meal-boxes at her own risk. She started cooking about 70-100 boxes (which is all she could afford) at a rented kitchen in Sai kung, for bringing a smile to the hungry faces on the streets. “I feel happy when I see them smile”, says Ms May. One meal consists of cooked rice, seasoned vegetables and chicken. Other days of the week, she finds her passion in organic farming. Few good-will volunteers join to cook with her, help deliver and distribute meal-boxes directly to the hands of the needy. Organic farming, teaching and some donations help her sustain her mission.
The author, a NAIS Hong Kong parent, who had met her as part of a research work two years ago, observed that even today, Ms May perseveres with her cooking, farming and service, is a model of active aging with passion and purpose, something to learn from! - M🌱
How can we join her?
During this midterm break, on Tuesday, 15th October, few of us, parents & children, will be joining Ms May at Sai Kung for cooking, packing meal boxes in the morning and distributing the meal boxes in the afternoon. If you would like to join us for this activity or any future activities, you may send a request to join the PTA Community Outreach Group.
