Activities
Both Primary and Secondary students engaged in a number of activities to celebrate Literacy Week in Léman. The week began with poetry spoken by students in the many different languages represented at the school. This was followed by preparation for the Tongue Twister House competition which took place later in the week.
Daily Quizzes
Each day students were given a variety of literacy based tasks which they could answer and gain house points. These activities ranged from word puzzles to image and catch phrase puzzles as well as Literature based questions.
All the students were thoroughly engaged in these activities each morning and earned many important points for their houses.
Story Telling
During the week students from the EAL department visited Primary classes to read stories and to share creative ideas with the Primary students. This is an important activity for developing confidence with spoken English.
The theme of Storytelling continued on Friday morning with the Grade 10’s and some of the Grade 12’s leading a number of Storytelling activities that involved acting, drawing and creative verbal improvisation inspired by a series of wonderful pictures by Chris Van Allsburg. For two hours students rotated so that they could take part in as many different Storytelling activities as possible. This rotation was interspersed with visits to the main foyer to admire the amazing work displayed there and to visit the Star Gazing room courtesy of the LFA.
The morning was rounded off with the Tongue Twister Competition where amazingly quick speaking students battled for the title of best Tongue Twister.
The final assembly saw the results for the house points, and the presentation of all the wonderfully creative notice boards that the tutor classes had created.
Students were also entertained by our talented Slam Poets who achieved so well in the CISA Slam Poetry Competition; and a version of Roald Dahls Ver-sion of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ presented by the Léman Theatre group. An entertaining and comical end to a fun and interactive week. It is nice to see the older children working with and guiding the younger children through creative learning.
