Our highly qualified English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department supports our students of varied abilities in English. In the Primary years, our EAL team works with homeroom teachers to provide differentiated instruction in class as well as direct instruction outside of class for students who need a little extra help. In Years 7 and 8, we have a parallel programme for English language learners in science, humanities, and language arts.
At LIS Chengdu, our approach to language learning is one of additive bilingualism: as students become more proficient in English, we ensure they maintain their skills in their native language. By Secondary School, our students begin the MYP programme, where languages are studied at 'A' and 'B' levels. English 'A' covers English Language and Literature, while English 'B' covers Language Acquisition. English 'B' classes are suitable for those with varying EAL needs.
