The International School of Moscow’s annual Spelling Bee 2022/23 was an exceptional event, which saw students from Years 1 to 6 across all three campuses delving into the wonderful world of spelling. The students returned to school after the October half term holidays and dove straight into practising a range of phonetically tricky words, which was exciting to witness. Moving through the corridors, it was common to hear students testing each other’s knowledge of the words and to see them sharing their practice scores!
Despite the thick snow, dark mornings and freezing temperatures, our hearts were warmed to see the excitement building in the students as the campus finals, which took place on Friday 25th November, were getting nearer. In Rosinka, Krylatskoye Lower Campus and Krylatskoye Upper Campus, students participated in their class finals in an attempt to reach the top 2 places per year group, where they would compete in the campus finals!
On Friday 25th November, we saw some absolutely outstanding competitors, who managed to spell 20 words in less than 60 seconds, which is an exceptional feat in and of itself. One winner and one runner-up per year group was chosen by our impartial 3-person judging panel, with all students cheering and being very supportive of all the competitors.
Friday 2nd December saw all the finalists from Years 1 to 6 travelling to our fantastic Rosinka campus, where they competed for the title of ‘Spelling Bee Winner 2022/23’. The competition was incredibly intense, with our impartial judges working extra hard to keep up with the incredible spelling speed of our competitors, who really demonstrated an exceptional level of hard work, cooperation and sportsmanship, and are an absolute credit to their school!
The spelling scores and speeds were so closely matched, that the Year 5 students ended up competing in a sudden death round, expertly spelling 5 words that they hadn’t seen or practised. After this, a winner and a runner up were announced per year group.
It was incredibly motivating to watch the students as they prepared; I am extremely excited about next year’s Spelling Bee!
Research shows that confident students are more likely to succeed academically.
In fact, several science-backed studies cite self-confidence as the number one predictor of academic achievement. Researchers found that students with greater confidence were more willing to learn and challenge themselves. They were also more motivated, resilient, and capable of dealing with adversity.
At the International School of Moscow (ISM), our job is to build and nurture positive self-esteem in children. But what is confidence? And how does it affect academic performance?
