When moving to Geneva, employers or relocation agents should be able to help with finding a suitable home or advising on which areas are most suitable to live in. Those with families and considering Collège du Léman have many choices within an easy commutable distance from the school, including in the town of Versoix where the school is situated.
If deciding to live in Geneva itself, choices are restricted by the limited availability and property prices. However, public transport in the centre is efficient, including buses and trams which serve the whole area, and they are always making road improvements for those choosing to drive. However, traffic during rush hour can make journeys a lot longer. Trains are regular and reliable out of town on the right bank to Versoix, Nyon and beyond making living outside of the city centre a good option.
Collège du Léman also offers a safe and reliable bus service to selected areas around the region. Where possible, this service is door to door helping families with the logistics of school and work routines. For more information about the service and the routes covered, please contact the school.
The picturesque little villages and towns dotted along the lake from Geneva to Nyon are a popular choice amongst expat families living in this part of Switzerland. For those wanting a bit more life without the Geneva traffic, Nyon is a vibrant town with plenty to offer. Many of the villages between Geneva and Nyon, such as Mies, Tannay, Coppet and Versoix are on the train line and are popular for very good reasons. Apart from being on the railway line, they are also a 20 minute drive to some of the main organisations such as the United Nations and other major offices. These villages are close to France, the auto route and the airport, and they are a short drive to main shopping centres.
Neighbouring areas including Chambesy, Genthod, and Bellevue are good choices too, and of course there are more rural options for those seeking a true Swiss countryside experience. Most rental accommodation is arranged through real estate agents, called Regies, authorised by the Cantonal Government. There are also various websites and bulletin boards that advertise available properties to rent.
France is very close and many people choose to live over the border in towns such as Ferney-Voltaire, Gex, Divonne Les Bains and Annemasse due to more affordable property prices. House sizes here tend to be larger but it is important to be mindful of the different rules and regulations to renting or buying a property in France.
