BVIS Students Shine at Global Campus International Debate Week 2024

BVIS Students Shine at Global Campus International Debate Week 2024 - BVIS Students Shine at Global Campus International Debate Week 2024

During the week from 18th to 22nd November 2024, our BVIS students BQ, Leo, Angelia, and Kate took part in the exciting International Global Campus Global Debate Week, showcasing impressive scholarly determination and skill. Despite having no prior experience with the British Parliamentary debating system, the team quickly mastered the format, practicing diligently against each other and even their teachers.

Their first debate was against our sister school in Abu Dhabi, tackling the motion: "Every student aged 9–11 should have to undertake community service." Representing the Opposition, the BVIS team crafted a strong and thought-provoking argument.

Kate and BQ earned top marks with their powerful and emotive speeches, setting the stage for the Opposition side. Kate's opening speech outlined the risks of pressuring young children into emotionally challenging situations, while BQ followed with an eloquent and passionate argument questioning the effectiveness of mandatory community service for children. Both speakers displayed a level of maturity and insight beyond their years, making the BVIS team proud of their ability to engage in such a scholarly debate.

Debate Week, now in its second year, aims to foster global perspectives and encourage students to be both proud and curious about their ability to engage in thoughtful, scholarly dialogue. BVIS’s team triumphed by securing both first and second place, a testament to their skill, teamwork, and dedication.

Students from both schools engaged in lively discussions, gaining valuable experience in critical thinking and public speaking. The event sparked excitement for future debates, with additional Debate Weeks scheduled for March and May.

The competition is open to all students, including those in primary school. Anyone interested in participating should contact Ms. Mumby-Cole, Secondary English and Drama Teacher or Ms. Tram Le to register their interest.

Congratulations to the BVIS team for their outstanding performance and for representing the school with such passion, curiosity, and skill!
