Week 3, Term 2, 2024/2025
It has been another vibrant and busy week in Primary! Our KS2 Swim Galas were a highlight, and it was lovely to see so many of you there, cheering on your children and celebrating their achievements.

We also enjoyed the Year 3 Roman class assemblies, which were a wonderful showcase of the students’ learning and enthusiasm.

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Class Representatives to discuss and share various aspects of school life. One topic that sparked much interest was the use of devices. During our discussion, I referenced The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, a thought-provoking book that explores the rising levels of anxiety and depression among young people in today’s digital age. Mrs. Stringer will be leading our Parent Book Club sessions on this book, and I encourage you to join us for what promises to be an insightful journey.

In today’s technology-driven world, devices offer amazing opportunities for learning, communication, and entertainment. However, overuse can pose significant challenges, such as reduced attention spans, disrupted sleep patterns, and even dependency. As a school, we are committed to helping students develop healthy habits around technology use.

To that end, we are implementing several measures in Primary to ensure technology supports, rather than distracts from, learning and personal development. Before and after school will now be designated device-free times to encourage social interactions and a calm start and end to the day. Similarly, during break and lunch, devices, including smartwatches, will not be used, ensuring students focus on active play and meaningful conversations without distractions. Smartwatches with messaging or gaming functions can be particularly disruptive, and we ask for your support in ensuring these are used only outside of school hours.

In Years 4, 5, and 6, we are reviewing how and where devices are stored in classrooms to reduce distractions. Teachers will continue to ensure that devices are used purposefully and only when they clearly enhance learning. To further promote balance, we are considering a weekly device-free day in Primary, encouraging hands-on activities, teamwork, and creative thinking without screens. More details about this initiative will be shared soon.

We will also continue teaching children about digital responsibility. This includes essential topics like not sharing personal details online, asking for permission before taking or sharing photos, and understanding the importance of respectful communication.

We encourage you to join us in reinforcing these principles at home. Setting device-free times during meals or evenings and ensuring devices are kept out of bedrooms at night are great ways to support this effort. By working together, we can help our children develop the skills they need to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly while thriving academically and socially.

As we approach the Chinese New Year holidays next week, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a joyful and prosperous Chinese New Year. May the Year of the Snake bring happiness, health, and success to all in our BSKL community.

Thank you for your partnership and support in fostering the well-being of our students.
