Week 12, Term 1, 2024/2025
After witnessing today’s singing assembly, it’s inspiring to see the joy and enthusiasm our students have for music. The musical talent at BSKL is exceptional, with students reading music, performing in assemblies before an audience of 700, and showing a level of confidence that is truly impressive.

Comparing this to my own experience in primary school, where learning "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on the recorder felt like a milestone - it’s mind-blowing to think of what these students will achieve as they grow older.

At BSKL, we recognise that a strong music curriculum is not just about learning notes and rhythms; it offers an array of benefits that support students’ overall development and enrich their educational journey.

A well-rounded music curriculum brings significant cognitive, emotional, and social advantages. Research consistently shows that engaging in music improves memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Learning to read music, follow rhythms, and play instruments requires a high level of focus, pattern recognition, and coordination - skills that carry over into areas like mathematics, reading, and critical thinking.

Music also plays an essential role in emotional development. Singing, playing an instrument, and creating music allow students to express emotions, manage stress, and develop resilience. These activities support social-emotional growth, fostering skills such as self-confidence, perseverance, and empathy. Participating in music with others, whether in a choir or ensemble, teaches children valuable lessons in collaboration, listening, and respect.

At BSKL, our commitment to music is particularly evident through our Primary Instrumental Programme for Students (PIPS), where each child begins learning an instrument from Year 2. This early exposure is a powerful aspect of our curriculum and one that sets us apart. The PIPS programme allows children to experiment, explore, and refine their musical talents. As they develop technical skills on their chosen instruments, they also build discipline, patience, and a sense of personal achievement.

Moreover, we are proud to have a strong partnership with The Juilliard School through Nord Anglia Education (NAE). This partnership, which supports our promise of "World Class BSKL," ensures that our performing arts teachers stay at the forefront of best practices in arts education. In the coming week, we will have two teachers from Juilliard visiting BSKL to offer professional development to our performing arts teachers, which will further enrich the learning experiences we can provide.

Music also strengthens our school culture, creating shared experiences and connections that extend across year groups. Singing assemblies, music performances, and instrument practice are collective moments that enhance students’ sense of belonging and pride in their community.

In short, a strong music curriculum supports the development of well-rounded, confident, and resilient students. We’re proud of the role music plays at BSKL and grateful for the support of our community in nurturing this invaluable part of our children’s education.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,
