During the summer break, Wern Xin Year 10, representing Malaysia at this year's Thailand British Parliamentary Debate Open 2024 has achieved an impressive 3rd rank of best novice speaker. Leonard Soon Year 10 was followed soon after accomplishing an astounding 15th-best novice speaker.

At Mahidol University, they were able to compete against 45 other teams and 88 speakers to argue their way to the top 15 of the best speakers in the novice category.

After putting hours into training, the two showcased their exceptional skills in the 4 rounds of the debate tournament where they faced some of the most challenging competitors with their respective teammates. Wern Xin demonstrated remarkable resilience whilst competing against seasoned debaters and teams. She was also ambitious enough to put up a good fight and performance when she faced the top 3 best open teams of the tournament in her 2nd round. This tournament only being her fourth one, and the first international.

This being his first international tournament too, Leonard showcased his exceptional determination when facing motions with confusing interpretations to it, managing to pull through and achieving a rank 2 amongst 3 other teams in his room. Despite the challenges the two had to overcome, this did not discourage them, instead it fueled their motivation to improve their performance.

The THBPO debate tournament, held every year, is an esteemed international-level event where young debaters from across Thailand and neighbouring countries compete against three other teams in a room in hopes to persuade the judges. This year’s tournament featured over 88 debaters from seasoned trainers to knowledge hungry students.

We praise Wern Xin and Leonard for taking the risk and participating in this tournament overseas, their hard work and dedication paying off at their accomplishments.
