Those who have an official handicap number have the chance to play per week at either Tropicana Golf Country Resort or Kuala Lumpur Golf Club (KLGC). Those who have yet to secure their official handicap can still participate in termly school competitions or other. We encourage students to take golf lessons and are looking to provide a more structured “BSKL Golf Club” in term 3 2024. Over these last two years we have competed in various school competitions, friendly matches versus Garden International School and two FOBISIA international trips (one in the Philippines and another in Thailand).
The future is bright for our BSKL golfers! See below some comments from our current BSKL team members. They explain why they love being a part of this team and what competition means to them and why it is important.

My experience with the golf team has definitely changed how I play and view golf as a sport, playing with young people of my ages makes the sport a lot more enjoyable as it is one of the most mentally challenging sports.
By playing on the team I have learnt to enjoy golf but to still practice and work hard. Being on a team with peers close to your age expands your knowledge of the sport on how each individuals focuses on different aspects with different goals while still making friends in different age groups.
This can help students get along with others in the future and take in different views and mindsets. The competitions themselves help students learn to follow rules, make new friends, focus on taking their time and find friendly competition with other kids but still making it fun and engaging.

By being on the golf team, you learn how to work and play with others. As well as learning how to help yourself and everyone else around you. These skills can be applied in almost any moment of day-to-day life, with either improving on your own skills or working on a project with a team.
The golf team can also help you improve your playing to a competitive level. Experiencing tournaments at a young age is very important. They can benefit your ability to work under pressure and sportsmanship, both very valuable skills to learn. The results of a competition can also be a great motivator, pushing you to your limits and challenging your capabilities.

Being on the golf team teaches us important skills such as discipline, focus, teamwork, and communication. These skills are transferable to other areas of life, such as academics, working effectively with others, careers, personal relationships and achieving goals, where they contribute to success and fulfillment. Competitions and championships help young players grow, learn to handle pressure, set goals, improve their skills, and gain recognition. These are crucial for development as athletes and individuals.
Jaime - Year 13 - Handicap 11
Joining the golf team instills invaluable soft skills that go beyond the green and can help in many aspects of life. I find myself in competitions walking on the fairway alongside others who start as strangers. In these moments, as we walk to our balls to hit our next shots, communication flourishes. Conversations sparked in between shots set paths for new friendships, turning momentary interactions into bonds that go beyond the golf course.
Golf teaches resilience, and it's a testament to one's ability to rise above challenges, like when the ball doesn't fly as you would hope for and frustrations linger over you like a heavy weight. However, within these trials, I discovered mental toughness, learning to navigate these frustrations with grace and maturity. This allows me to redefine my strategy and improve my critical thinking and decision-making skills to minimise the damage caused by a bad day.
Sportsmanship and etiquette serve as cornerstones of golf and symbolise the significance of respecting others' achievements. From waiting silently while your opponent takes their shot to fixing divots, taking our hats off and shaking hands to even calling penalties on yourself, this level of integrity and honour is a powerful lesson in humility and honesty, teaching us to hold these values in every aspect of our lives.
Collaboration and teamwork are vital for success in golf competitions. Beyond the individual desire to get first place is the team's common goal, claiming victory as a school. This shared pursuit unveils support and words of affirmation for one another, embodying the very essence of unity and a shared purpose.
Joining the BSKL golf team is not confined to mastering golf, instead, it's about shaping your character, forming new bonds within and outside of school and gaining valuable transferable skills on the greens and beyond. On the fairways, under the vast sky, lies the place for personal growth, where every shot is a step towards becoming your better self.
