Riess Year 11, Sasha Year 10, Mika Year 9 and Zac Year 8 were amongst the 1100 athletes from the 10 districts of Selangor who participated in this competition to find the best athletes in the state of Selangor. This was truly one of the most intense athletics meets that our students have ever participated in and had the best athletes from schools all over the state including many National and State sports school athletes.
Riess who represented Petaling Utama in the Javelin event, was the first to break a record at this year’s championship bringing complete silence to the whole stadium with his astounding throw of 49.98 meters. Riess broke the record twice during this event and won Gold. He was named the Selangor State Athlete of the year for L1 at the closing ceremony.
Sasha represented the district in four events - Javelin, Discus, 100m and 4x100m relay. Sasha won her first gold of the meet when she convincingly won the P2 Javelin event with a distance of 32.21 meters. Almost immediately after winning the Javelin, Sasha anchored her team to a third place finish in the hard fought 4x100m relay race, winning her second medal of the meet. Sasha then went on to create quite the stir in the stadium when she broke the State record twice and claimed the Gold for Discus with a distance of 32.11 meters. Sasha was the only P2 athlete to break a record at this year’s State Championship. She was also amongst the top 8 sprinters for her age group having made it to the finals of the 100m event. With 2 golds, a bronze and a new state record to her name, Sasha was also named the Selangor State Athlete of the year for P2 at the closing ceremony of the meet.
Riess and Sasha were the only Petaling Utama athletes to win the Athlete of the Year awards at this year’s State Championship.
Zac, despite being unwell and under medication, showed his resilience and determination, and chose to participate in the 2 events he was selected for - L4 Shot Put and Javelin. Zac was placed 5th overall in the state of Selangor for shot put, and finished 9th overall in Selangor for Javelin.
Mika also competed in the L3 javelin event, placing 9th overall for his efforts.
The Petaling Utama district finished third overall in Selangor. By Being Ambitious, Taking Risks and Being Resilient, Riess, Sasha, Mika and Zac have done BSKL proud by making it to the top athletics competition in the state of Selangor.
Sasha and Riess will now represent the state of Selangor in the Malaysian National Athletics Championships (MSSM) in October 2023, another outstanding achievement and honour for them and BSKL.
Well done all!
