Hello! I am Kiana from Year 10 and I am one of the selected BSKL NAE UNICEF Summit Representatives this year.
I was keen in participating in the NAE UNICEF Summit as I have always been incredibly interested with the work of UNICEF and the United Nations. Additionally, I've always been actively engaged, engrossed and passionate about the Sustainable Development Goals and resolving different global dilemmas.
The selection process was a rigorous yet incredible one. It not only enabled me to exercise my knowledge about the SDGs and different world issues as well as my debating and public speaking skills, but I also learnt a considerable amount from my fellow applicants.
I have participated in many different CCAs and activities which have contributed to my preparation for this summit such as the Law Society, The International Award, History Representatives, Primary Volunteering, being part of the House Leadership Team and my prior experience in the Social Impact Team, Student Council, MUN and much more.
From the summit, I hope to gain and develop my communication, teamwork, public speaking and debating skills as well as enhance my creativity and innovation. Furthermore, I hope to gain more knowledge regarding the Global Goals and universal concerns.
When returning back to BSKL in August 2023, I hope to bring back new creative ways, using the knowledge I learnt from the summit, in how to make informing and educating about the global goals as engaging and interactive as possible. I aim to do this by collaborating with different subject departments and committees in implementing their specific relevant global goals with their streamline of focus and work, such as into their lessons and activities, in order to ensure students are actively engaging and being informed about the different global goals in every possible suitable way.
I'm extremely excited to be attending this summit and having the privileged opportunity to learn many beneficial lessons and skills from this experience and the other individuals attending.
Kiana, Year 10
Hello everyone! I am Serena from Year 10. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the teachers that have nurtured me throughout my years here at BSKL, from the infancy stage to upper secondary - they have all shaped me to become the student I am today.
I wanted to partake in the NAE UNICEF Summit primarily because being the ambassador representing BSKL means I am able to convey the voices of students to the world stage, embodying the values of the school. This presents the opportunity to speak to like-minded students from all around the globe, forming connections with the wider Global Campus community.
Being an active student heavily involved in the further development of the school, such as through my CCA commitments: The Duke of Edinburgh, Primary Volunteering, Oxbridge Club and a series of sports commitments has allowed me to truly understand the pillars deeply rooted in the school community, finding ways to move forward. The student leadership roles I am involved in have also empowered me to create change within the school community. Beyond this, the school has supported me through my community service work, advocating for autism awareness - my efforts now reaching the international stage, and it is something I am looking to incorporate into discussions during the summit!
The selection process resembled a real-life experience of a professional application process. Comprising of an application letter and video, eventually followed up with a round table discussion. I thoroughly enjoyed the round-table discussion because of the different perspectives and alternative opinions everyone had to offer, this excites me for what is to come during the summit! It truly inspires me to see how we students are beyond capable of making a positive impact in the wider community, with the transferrable skills and global awareness BSKL has equipped us with.
I hope to gain new perspectives on Global Goals and be enlightened by other Student Representatives in the different ways they have implemented SDG-oriented projects in their respective schools. I am awaiting the knowledge I will gain regarding the Global Goals - through the 'World's largest lesson' and more!
During the next academic year, I hope to bring the plenitude of knowledge yielded from the summit to benefit BSKL on a larger scale. Along the same vein, I am looking to implement various whole-school activities and workshops that will spark interest amongst students, encouraging them to advocate for the SDGs they resonate with. I aim to empower the students to further develop the school community, and perhaps inspire them to represent BSKL for this very summit!
