Student social impact projects receive US$150,000 funding from Nord Anglia’s charitable fund

<KUALA LUMPUR>, 6 JUNE 2022 – Premium international schools group Nord Anglia Education today announced it has awarded over US$150,000 from its latest round of funding to ten new student-led social impact projects. A key element of Nord Anglia’s education strategy is to help students develop their sense of purpose and global citizenship as they create and lead community impact initiatives.

With investment from Nord Anglia’s Charitable Giving Grant, students will use the funding to expand and enhance their community activities, aligned to addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Students’ funding proposals were all evaluated by Nord Anglia’s Charitable Giving Committee — chaired by Dr Jane Gaskell, member of Nord Anglia’s Education Advisory Board — and the recently formed Student Advisory Board. This student board is made up of representatives from Nord Anglia schools around the world and ensures young people’s voices are heard in key decision-making processes for Nord Anglia’s charitable vision.

Katalin Meszaros, Student Advisory Board representative for the Middle East and Grade 10 student at the British International School Abu Dhabi said, “I feel that it is really important for us students, who are the future generation, to speak up and take action towards global issues to inspire others to take action as well.”

Students are developing, planning, fundraising, and then carrying out projects that address key UNICEF goals relating to climate, education, refugees, poverty, mental health and more. I am thrilled to see the progress they are making and can’t wait to see how these latest initiatives change our world for the better.”

The following ten proposals were awarded grants from Nord Anglia Education in its latest round of funding:

• ‘Precious Plastics’ at British International School Ho Chi Minh City will collect and repurpose plastic waste developing upcycled products for sale, tackling both environmental and social sustainability issues.
• Two programmes from the Prague British International School and the British School Warsaw will help Ukrainian refugees in these cities through the provision of food, education, and specialised support for families in need.
• ‘Play for Keeps’ at Windermere Preparatory School will donate sports equipment and meals and provide mentoring for underserved children.
• ‘METGREEN 22’ at the Metropolitan School of Panama is a student-led conference for young people in the Americas, to raise awareness and take action on environmental issues
• ‘Opening Minds, Opening Lives’ at Nord Anglia International School Pudong will support orphans with education.
• ‘The Rewilding Project’ at British International School Budapest will create a rewilding and gardening area at the school to encourage biodiversity and support physical and mental wellbeing for students.
• ‘The Bee Project’ at Country Day School will create a safe habitat for bees and provide a hands-on curricular source for experiential learning at various grade levels and subject areas.
• ‘EduGrow’ at Oakridge International School Gachibowli will provide extracurricular support for children at underserved schools in the community.
• ‘Ocean Conservation’ at Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam will address a pressing environmental issue by supporting regular beach clean-ups.
