Amy is a passionate and dynamic teacher, who views teaching as a lifestyle rather than a profession; a role in children’s lives which is a pure privilege, not just a job. She was heavily influenced by inspiring teachers, wanting to follow in their footsteps, becoming the motivating influence herself. As is life, a ‘twist and turn’ or two meant Amy began her working career in a completely different field. After a prolonged illness forced a re-evaluation of her then desire to join the Police force, Amy renewed her childhood ambition of becoming a teacher.
She gained her BA Hons. Degree in Primary Teaching with Mathematics from the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus, in 2007. Amy began teaching at Braeburn Community Junior School as an NQT and remained there for six years. Working in a school centred within a highly deprived catchment area, Amy learnt the importance of school being a ‘safe’ place for children. Her classroom became a fun, vibrant place to be. Although her expectations of her student’s progress constantly remained high, she developed an understanding of teaching the children to be confident in their own abilities, to value their successes, and take ownership of their learning within the rigid objectives of the curriculum.
In 2014, Amy moved to Guangzhou to begin her career at The British School of Guangzhou. Although the student dynamics of BSG is completely opposite to her previous school, Amy’s teaching and learning philosophy remains the same. She teaches with continuous passion, dedication, and commitment to ensuring all students in her care progress academically and socially.
Since she first joined BGS, Amy has held different roles and for the past seven years, she has been a Year 6 teacher, a year group in which she found her Primary phase niche. Being a teacher in the children’s final stage of the Primary phase enabled Amy to stretch the student’s knowledge, mould the students as self-confident, responsible learners, and motivate them to become independent thinkers, ready for the exciting Secondary phase of their educational adventure.
Starting her eleventh year at BSG, Amy decided to make the transition up to the Secondary phase within BSG herself, teaching Mathematics. This is an exciting career development for Amy; a chance to make greater use of her Mathematics degree and to extend her passion and drive for the subject.
Outside of school, Amy is an easy-going person who enjoys laughing and bringing smiles to people’s faces. She enjoys swimming and walking when being active outside of school but actually enjoys nothing more than relaxing on the sofa watching crime television series such as NCIS and CSI, or old-school shows like Columbo and Cagney and Lacey. Amy tries to travel to her home village of Hunmanby in North Yorkshire every opportunity she gets. Here she spends her time spoiling her beloved niece Thea and nephew Callen.
