Our BSB Model United Nations (MUN) Team recently participated in the West Lake MUN and BEIMUN conferences. Please see an update written by Year 12 students Lily and Wendy.
WLMUN
“[I was very happy] when we were debating on pepperoni pizza. Because I like pepperoni pizza, but I don’t love it, and it’s tasty.”
Yes, pizzas are indeed tasty.
This may seem unimportant, but it’s a 200-billion-dollar industry with specialised corporations.
For 72 hours, ten delegates from the BSB Model United Nations club drafted resolutions on topics from pizza to child labour and explored issues from historic conflicts in Cyprus to global disarmament.
From 8th to 10th November, our delegates travelled to Hangzhou International School to participate in West Lake MUN (WLMUN) conference. With the theme of ‘One step back, two steps forward’, the delegates surely took big steps forward.

“I’ll be honest, before this conference I had no idea what an Amendment was, but by the end of the three days, had made more than 5.” - Pauline (Y10), Outstanding Delegate Award, First Conference.
“In this trip of MUN, the most happy moment was when I did my first ever modify amendment.” - Jeremy (Y8), demonstrating great improvements.
The conference chairs complimented all our delegates for their dedication, bravery, and charisma to every committee session. With one honourable mention and three awards, BSB delegates showcased their passion for debate, facing world problems head-on as global citizens, and agents of change.“Even though I was not interested in history at all, the pressure of being in Historic Security Council led myself to researching through the whole internet about Cyprus conflicts and Cenepa war. Through 3 days of active debate, I realized that the true joy of MUN does not come from staying in comfort zone but comes from stepping into new world of knowledge.” - Lily Year 12

BEIMUN
Simultaneously, ten BSB middle school delegates were just across the road at the International School of Beijing, attending the Beijing Model United Nations Junior Conference (BEIMUN Jr). Our delegates found the conference to be a smooth and excellent conference thanks to the secretariat team, directors, and admins running it. During the opening ceremony, the delegates listened to a UN representative’s speech, finding it mesmerising to hear about how MUN led to her working in the UN.

The delegates engaged in lobbying sessions, exchanging ideas and making friends. Although there were moments of nervousness, the delegates enjoyed debating, bringing creative and dynamic ideas to the table, and listening to different opinions from different delegates. Overall, they yielded a successful outcome of one delegate winning the Most Passionate Delegate award.
