As part of our Literacy curriculum at BSB Sanlitun, we introduced the Drawing Club Literacy Programme. This innovative programme from the UK offers a unique and engaging approach to developing early literacy skills while fostering creativity and self-expression. Through drawing, children explore and visualise stories, making connections between images and words.
This process naturally supports phonetic development as children begin to apply their understanding of sounds to their writing. As they draw, children are encouraged to focus on the sounds they hear in words, strengthening their ability to segment and blend phonemes—an essential skill for writing. Drawing Club provides a safe and enjoyable space for children to experiment with writing, whether they are labelling their drawings, constructing simple sentences, or writing for other purposes.
In Reception, Drawing Club takes place daily, beginning with a short whole group session focused on a picture book, tale or animation, followed by teacher supported small group activities. The structured yet playful approach allows children to strengthen both their reading and writing skills while fostering a love of language. The combination of whole group input and small group activities ensures that each child receives personalised support, helping them to develop their skills in an engaging, meaningful and supportive context.

Year 5 students had the opportunity to visit an impressive exhibition of Shang and Zhou Dynasty artifacts at the Poly Art Museum. We are fortunate to have such wonderful museums close to our school - there are many benefits to being located in the heart of Beijing!
Here, at BSB Sanlitun, we were pleased to host two weeks of visits of two Juilliard specialists from New York, across 3 full working days. Our Primary students got to experience a variety of lessons and teaching styles as Nick Mahmat and Brian Drye stepped into our classrooms and led music and drama activities.
