Exploring Similes: A Journey of Comparison and Creativity

Exploring Similes | BSB Sanlitun - Exploring Similes

Our Year 3 students have been immersed in the world of similes, exploring how to vividly compare two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. Here’s a glimpse into what they’ve been up to:

Active Learning Through Movement:

To kick off our simile adventure, students actively engaged in completing simile sentences, by voting for the missing word(s) as a class by physically moving and standing in specific locations to cast their votes.

Creating Their Own Similes:

Building on their understanding, students used word banks of nouns and adjectives which were in part created as a class to craft their own simile sentences. They selected descriptive words that effectively compared one thing to another. From comparing animals, transportation, famous buildings to everyday objects, students explored the power of language.

Team Paper Basketball Quiz:

To test their knowledge and understanding of similes, students participated in a team-based paper basketball quiz. This quiz challenged their ability to identify and create correct similes and apply them in different contexts. Working collaboratively, they demonstrated an understanding of simile construction and their enthusiasm for some friendly competition.

Throughout these activities, students not only learned about similes but also honed their teamwork skills and boosted their confidence in expressing themselves in English. I have been impressed by their eagerness to learn and participate and their progress in developing this aspect of language.

I encourage you to discuss with your child what they have been learning about similes at home. You can prompt them to share their favourite simile sentences or ask them to create new ones to describe things around them or at home.
