Nursery has been having a fabulous time learning all about Community Helper. The children enjoyed role-playing in different areas of an interest: hospital, school, dentist, police station and restaurant.
We discussed what are Community Helpers, what is involved with each job and how they help us. These occupations help people, like a police man or nurse, when we need assistants. Some of the children expressed an interest in becoming a doctor when they grow up because they want to help people feel better. Other children expressed an interest in becoming a police officer because they like helping people find stuff when they have lost it. The children learned some key vocabulary from each area. For example, doctors use a stethoscope to listen to people’s hearts and dentists use small mirrors to look at people’s teeth and police officers use walkie-talkies to get information from other police officers.
The children have been absorbed with role-playing in various dramatic play areas. The children were using police station outfits, dentist and doctor’s tools, and taking orders for the restaurant to enhance and act out their play. Many children role-played as doctors and making phone calls to patients. Another popular role-play was the restaurant. The children developed their listening and fine motor skills by taking food orders and preparing the food. It is so wonderful to see how quickly the children have been able to use the new vocabulary in their play and act out realistic experiences with friends.
