In an engaging exploration of social dynamics in EAL, Year 5 delved into the intricate world of offering advice. Armed with phrases like ‘You should’ and ‘You must not’, they created illustrations and wrote sentences to encourage people to either do or not do things. You can see students’ responses to the stimulus of draw a picture or symbol and write a sentence explaining it, which represents one of the phrases we’ve learnt when giving advice.
From cautionary burger symbols with a cross on it, with the tag line of ‘You shouldn’t eat in the classroom’ to thoughtful gestures signaling the importance of being silent when the teacher’s talking: ‘You shouldn’t talk when the teacher is’.
Year 5 also delved into the nuances of plural and possessive forms and how to identify which should be used depending on the context of the sentence. In the pictures below you can see students working collaboratively in a scavenger hunt style activity. Students worked in teams, relay style to locate a variety of plural, possessive and error ridden sentences, which were placed around the classroom for them to find. Students scoured the classroom and corrected errors by unveiling missing apostrophes and wayward spelling, whilst categorising sentences in to either plural or possessive.
Students then engaged in a ‘peer review’ session by reviewing how other teams had categorised their sentences. Before giving feedback on whether they agreed or disagreed with any sentence corrections, and the category that a or multiple sentences had been put in.
