Join Our Open Morning
The Year 2s have been incredibly busy learning how to count money in British Pounds and Pence over the past few weeks.
We started off our money unit by learning to identify different notes and coins in British currency. We did this by playing fun matching games while exploring the values of the coins and notes. The children used their new knowledge of the value of money to choose the notes and coins they would need to make up certain amounts and to compare the values of money so that they could identify the larger amounts. We made coin caterpillars, threw dice to make up new values and learnt how to add and subtract money to solve complex two-step problems.
Once the children could confidently count and calculate with money to find change, we opened our own Secret Santa Shops in the classrooms! The children had to find objects that they wanted to sell, decide on a value they wished to sell it for, put price tags on the items and finally, display it in such a way that someone would be interested in buying it. The children had great fun selling to each other and used the skills they had learnt to know which items they could afford with the money they had and the sellers knew how much change they needed to give to the buyers. We are now masters at working with money!
