This week in Chinese, students explored the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. In this long evolutionary process, Chinese characters have not only played an important role in exchanging ideas and transmitting culture but also developed into a unique art form. KS2 students learned how to write '志存高远 zhì cún gāo yuǎn' (Be Ambitious) with brushes and ink. At the beginning we found it difficult to even hold a brush properly. However, after a few good practices, students have managed to wield the brush quickly and confidently. They even wrote in different fonts including seal style (篆书),regular script (楷书), official script (隶书) and running hand (行书).
In Reception, the children had another busy week learning about sea creatures in their Chinese lessons. They practised songs and chants about sea creatures. We enjoyed acting out all the interesting sea creatures from the story. The children also had lots of fun playing games like ‘Go, Go, Freeze’ to help them better understand the characters from the story.
Year 2 non-native speaking group learned about family members. We participated in many activities to develop listening and speaking skills. The children had so much fun singing and dancing along the Chinese song ‘I Love My Family’. Year 2 have also made their family book in Chinese. They have challenged themselves to practise writing the Chinese characters with their hands, bodies, and all kinds of materials we could find in the classrooms.
Students in Year 5 have had a great time making traditional Chinese custom craft. They worked together to learn the instruction and came up with some brilliant ideas and turned them into beautiful artworks. Check out our wonderful display in the Chinese corridor and learn some fascinating Chinese culture with Year 5!

Our Primary students got to experience a variety of lessons and teaching styles as Nick Mahmat and Brian Drye stepped into our classrooms and led music and drama activities.
