Year 6 have been learning about the destructive nature of floods as part of our first STEAM challenge of 2022!

Students in Year 6 researched the cause of floods and how villages and towns, close to rivers, can help prevent the damage caused by these examples of Extreme Weather.

Students worked together to create realistic villages made with natural materials to simulate a flood. They thought about their village house designs and which materials could help prevent flooding. It was great seeing the students apply their knowledge and understanding to overcome obstacles, work together and ‘Be Ambitious’.

The students in Year 6 also used a range of digital apps to further enhance their learning. Students used Minecraft to build virtual villages to simulate the effects of floods. Using photoshop apps, students were able to truly imagine the damage caused by floods in familiar settings.

Our STEAM unit on Floods was also linked to English, where the students wrote descriptive sentences, using figurative language and expanded noun phrases to describe a village before and after a flood.

Our learning related to Floods is a fantastic example of how group-based STEAM tasks can be combined with digital activities and with English to enhance and create memorable learning experiences for our students.
