Messy play focuses on exploring and experimenting without any end goal which allows young children to make their own discoveries using their senses whilst also developing their curiosity and knowledge. Resources such as paint, wet sand and shaving foam support the development of fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. It’s also a very sociable activity but one that doesn’t necessarily rely on words – which is perfect for the Tadpoles children as some of us are only just learning to talk as well as beginning to develop an understanding of English. Children can play together and share their discoveries without needing to explain things verbally. However, our sensory learning can also be a way of encouraging speech, for example by describing sensations, textures or marks.
Take a look at how the children have been discovering, experimenting and making marks through sensory exploration!
