This week in Chinese we learned the story of the monster Nián (年, year) and did various kinds of Chinese crafts to celebrate the coming Year of Rooster.
Children were told the story of the monster “年Nián”, and they learnt that “年Nián” was afraid of the colour red and big noises. Therefore the Chinese people would wear something red, stick red couplets onto their doors and play fireworks to scare the away the monster “年Nián”.
To celebrate the coming Year of Rooster, children made different images of Rooster and did some other hand crafts. Year 1 and Year 2 children made fish to wish everyone an abundant New Year (nián nián yǒu yú). Year 3 and Year 4 children made adorable chickens. Year 5 students did the paper cut of “春 chūn”, which means spring. Year 6 students designed and decorated their own gates in the CNY style. Students in Early Years also made chickens to celebrate the Rooster year. Everyone enjoyed their activities very much.
