At the beginning of a new school year, it is always an opportunity for a fresh start, one for all of us. That is especially the case in the international school setting, when we often spend our summer holidays travelling around the world. With this in mind, we often take on new challenges or rekindle old interests – and this often involves sports.
At The British International School Shanghai, our philosophy is ‘Be Ambitious’ and the Sports Programme for the year ahead reflects this – with opportunities for your child to participate, to compete and to specialise. We’re fortunate to have Marlon Devonish, our gold-winning Olympic Athlete, as an inspirational member of the school community and he will continue to work alongside our children to develop not just their physical skills, but also their mindsets – to strengthen their resilience and to recognise that through sport, emotional wellbeing can be achieved in a way that benefits children in both their academic and social development.
Some students will develop a passion and expertise in a particular sport and a few may develop this further to become amongst the best in their field. We want to provide the opportunities to allow this to happen. We want to ensure that they have opportunity to grow in the areas that they love and enable them to develop expertise and excellence in sport.
The Extra-Curricular Activities programme at BISS is extensive and can appear complex. Sport is just one strand of the additional activities that we offer. However, your child’s form tutor, our BISCAP co-ordinator, or our PE staff are on hand to answer any questions that you may have.
In the meantime, I am looking forward to seeing our students participate and compete in the following sports during this year – swimming; athletics; basketball; volleyball; football; tennis; netball; badminton, T-Ball and rugby. Our Swimming Programme has changed this year to allow greater opportunities for training and you can find out more information by clicking on the link on this page.
There are many competitive sports opportunities throughout the year and these differ depending upon your child’s year group. Please click on the relevant links to find out more details about these opportunities. You’ll find information on dates for competitions, including trials and training, locations of key events and the anticipated costs where relevant. We hope that this will help you in planning for the year ahead.
I hope that your child takes advantage of the Sports Programme at the school and that they reap the benefits that it will bring.
