Get the Summer Buzz with Year 13 student, Eugenie!

Over the summer, Year 13 BISH student, Eugenie,  was fortunate enough to intern at a pathology lab in Louisiana, as well observe a department within a local hospital. The opportunity with a local hospital was granted via her participation within the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). Both of these experiences were rooted in two different fields of medicine; however, they equally provided a wealth of knowledge gained from participating.

Within the pathology lab, Eugenie was able to observe a physician assistant while she completed her daily tasks, and look at slides of processed specimens under a double lens microscope. She also was assigned jobs to help the PAs in their daily routines. While interning, Eugenie learned the extensive and analytical nature of jobs within the pathology field.

While shadowing in one of the departments within the local hospital, Eugenie was exposed to how doctor to patient connection is key within the medical field. Greeting patients with an open attitude and warm smile is what the doctors did to help the patient and accompanying family, feel comfortable. From this experience, she saw the connections between patient care within and out of the clinical setting. Ultimately, both of these experiences gave Eugenie a great insight into a field of science, which holds the passions of many. 

Currently, our Year 13 student is working with her colleagues (and other BISH Year 13 students), Akshaya, Adel and Freya, on a research internship with British American Foundation of Texas (BAFTX), under the guidance of Ms Kay Thomson. Akshaya and Eugenie love being able to research for the growing foundation, and we hope that they will be able to work with BAFTX again.
