The 2018 NAE Global Campus Creative Writing Competition saw over 4000 students participate with 88 going on to be published in this year’s Creative Writing and Visual Arts Anthology. Out of the 88 published authors, we’re proud to reveal that 3 of these students are representing the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City with Year 7 student Raghav achieving ‘Highly Commended’ for his age group.
The 2018 Creative Writing competition had the overarching theme of showcasing the very best of what students can do whilst also aligning it to the Global Campus objectives of developing global citizenship and global mindedness, in line with UNICEF's Sustainable Development Goals. In asking our students to write about these themes, we encouraged them to think about what kind of world they want to inherit in the future.
The competition was split into 3 age categories: 8-11 years old, 11-14 years old and 14-18 years old. From the entries submitted by our budding writers here at BIS HCMC, 3 of our authors were shortlisted to appear in this year’s published anthology:
Raghav, our seasoned writer here at BIS HCMC, was also selected and recognised for his outstanding entry, winning the ‘Highly Commended’ award for his age category.
Our sincere congratulations go out to Ryan, Raghav and Amber for this wonderful achievement.
Below, you can hear audio clips of our three writers reading excerpts from their short stories.
How did you come up with your storyline?
“The theme was Down in the Dumps which I thought had a cross-meaning. You can physically be down in the dumps or you can feel sad so I wanted to take both of these ideas and combine them, bringing the rubbish to life through emotions.”
Raghav is no stranger to creative writing, winning 3 international writing competitions in the past 2 years:
Adding 'Highly Commended' in the 2018 Creative Writing Competition to his list of personal achievements is a wonderful accomplishment. Raghav continues to be an inspiration for young writers here at BIS as well as across our Nord Anglia group of schools.
Did you enjoy writing your story?
“I really did. I love writing, it’s a hobby for me.”
The annual Global Campus Creative Writing Competition enriches the English curriculum provided here at BIS HCMC, encouraging students from primary through to secondary to express their creativity through the medium of writing. It provides a unique opportunity for students to be published in an anthology that is read by students, parents and staff from each of our 55 international schools around the world. Extending our students' reach beyond BIS and Ho Chi Minh City helps them explore the world, learn new skills and set their sights higher, developing a truly international perspective through outstanding educational experiences.
